2012 Artist Statement:

Each human is born as a genetically predisposed being, developing with the influence of environment and circumstance, having his or her own changing perspective of truth and reality. We each judge, love, question and exist in a uniquely individual manner. The phenomenon of human emotion is complex and unstable, developing as we continue to seek the answers to age-old questions about purpose and existence. We communicate and comprehend through various combinations of the senses, often neglecting or misunderstanding our interactions. We judge quickly and harshly, without any regard to the other’s point of view. Sentiment takes over reason, resulting in misplaced concern or emotional squander.

I feel we are ultimately looking to make deeper connections and to find love and acceptance. My art revolves around the brevity and curiousity of our relationships with the physical world and the predictable, miraculous, often overlooked occurrences of life, more specifically, the small pieces that make up the magnificent whole. My gratitude for the intricacies of humankind compels my art to look at the exquisite subtleties of the everyday. My life and my work are buoyed by the appreciation I have for merely being alive and being able to see beauty in a world that is often wrought by hostility and hardship.

By examining and documenting identity, intimacy, honesty and gratification these works skip down a path of undulating surprise and patch-worked textures. My daily observations of fleeting pleasurable moments are transferred onto a physical representation of the intangible. I experiment and am surprised by how these experiments intuitively satisfy me. This process reveals fortuitous outcomes. The more closely the outcomes are examined, the more richly the wealth of details reveal themselves. These fragmented moments, some harder to realize than others, provide us with a mirror onto our self. We can then choose to acknowledge our privileges and freedoms and appreciate life’s ongoing wonders.
